Chapter 13: The Page
We got my father out of the grave together, Tomas on one side and Peter on the other.
I had not asked them to.
They had gone down into the shale on their knees and taken him under the arms.
I let them, because he was too heavy for me alone and I was too angry to be proud.
His feet were cut from the stones.
He did not speak.
We carried him home down the cemetery road in the first full light.
The parish women watched from their porches, and the pack came out of the doubles in their coats.
I put him in his bed and took the quilt up to his chin.
He looked at me and said, "I'm sorry."
"Not now, Papa," I said, and went out to the porch.
Tomas and Peter stood in the yard with their hands at their sides.
"Go home," I said.
"Zosia," Tomas said.
"I put a pin in your wine glass and walked out of your hall," I said.
"I know exactly how to say it.
"Go home."
They went.
Matthias was still at the cemetery gate when I came back up the hill that evening to look at the half-dug hole.
He had taken off his arbiter's pin, a silver key.
It sat in his open palm, small and plain.
He did not offer it and did not put it away.
