Chapter 19: Keys
The house in Sellwood had closed on the first of December, with the buyers taking the keys on the tenth, and by the first Saturday it held a stack of boxes and a mattress.
I stood in the living room in my work boots with a roll of tape in my hand.
The bare nail was still above the mantel.
Dane stood on a step stool in the hallway taking down the curtain rod, and the muscles in his back moved under his flannel.
I watched them move longer than the job needed.
"You're staring, Doctor," he said, without turning.
"I'm supervising."
"You're staring at my back," he said.
"Yes," I said.
He laughed, low, and stepped down off the stool.
He came across the room and kissed me.
It was a plain kiss, quick and warm, with the rod still in one hand, and I had never been kissed so easily in my life.
I had been told for six years that wanting was a thing you did on purpose.
I had never been told it could also be a thing that happened in a hallway.
