Chapter 15: Barbara's Table
Leah let go of Nate's hand and took out her phone in the middle of the lobby.
Her mother answered on the second ring.
"Lunch," Leah said. "Thursday. Your club. You and me and Nate."
Nate couldn't hear the answer, but he saw Leah's jaw set.
"Then pick the table you like best," Leah said. "I want everybody to see it."
On Thursday at noon the dining room at the club in Fox Chapel was full of women in good wool and men in golf sweaters.
It was the same building as the birthday banquet, one floor up, with a view over the eighteenth green.
Barbara had the round table in the window.
She had sat at it every Thursday for twenty years.
Leah's sister sat beside her in a white blouse, with her phone face down by her bread plate.
When Nate and Leah crossed the room, the conversations at the near tables stopped and started again lower.
Nate heard his own name twice, and the word attic once.
Barbara didn't get up.
"Sit down," she said. "I've ordered for everyone. The salmon's good on Thursdays."
