Chapter 13: The Whole of It
Ramiro's POV
I had rehearsed this in the dark for three months, and not one version began with her sitting on the floor.
She had her back against the bench and her knees drawn up.
She did not look at me when I sat down, a full arm's length away.
"The whole of it," Ximena said.
"Once, in order, and I will try not to interrupt."
"You may interrupt."
"I know," she said.
I started with the first life, because it was the one she had lost.
"In that one you were a stranger to me," I said.
"I read your father's name at the Count, and I read yours, and I did not know your face."
She stayed still.
"Tammy found the javelina in the Upper Spring on the morning of the Count," I said.
"The water would not take your name."
"Eleven hands came out of it when she read it."
"Eleven," Ximena said.
"I counted," I said.
"I count everything, because the book teaches a man to."
I looked at the black walnut over her head.
