Chapter 24: The Whole Rim
On the twenty-second of August, it rained on the Rim before sunrise, and Ramiro woke before the rain did.
I felt him go still beside me in the dark of the room over the feed store.
He lay on his back with his eyes open, and his heartbeat was loud in the quiet.
I knew what day it was.
"Get up," I said.
"It is not light," he said.
"Get up anyway."
I drove us up the Rim road in the rain, with the wipers going and my father's truck rattling under us.
I did not tell him where.
The lodge hall was empty and smelled of floor wax.
The long walnut table stood where it had always stood, with the benches pushed back for the weekly tallies.
The Rim's water rent had ended three weeks earlier, on a vote the elders took in four minutes.
The packs had cheered for a quarter hour.
Nobody paid for the springs now, and nobody was paid.
I found the pocketknife in Ramiro's jacket and took it out.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
