Chapter 23: The Parents Compete
Victor and Caroline brought competing kites to the picnic.
Audrey had said we'd like to fly one if the weather held.
They'd apparently heard separate invitations to become the better parent.
Victor's kite was large, striped and packed in a long protective tube.
Caroline's was shaped like a bright red bird.
Edith carried ordinary lemonade in her shopping bag.
"Mine's already assembled," she announced.
Hallie took the bottles from her and put them beside our blanket.
I spread the sandwiches while Audrey examined the two kites.
We'd brought one borrowed spool of string between us.
Victor had brought another, which he held up before anybody asked.
"Prepared," he said.
Caroline opened her red bird on the grass.
One wing folded beneath the other.
She straightened it and looked toward the wind.
