Chapter 14: Every Classroom

My mother slept on my grandmother's couch with her shoes still on.

At six forty-five she drove me to school in the gray hatchback, and neither of us said anything until the parking lot.

"I don't want you to forgive me today," she said. "I want you to watch."

"Watch what?"

"Come on."

The nurse's office was dark. She typed her birthday into the keypad, and the light went green for the second time in a week.

I stood in the doorway and thought about the last time I'd stood there with a pen in my hand.

My mother didn't look at the drawer. She went to the supply closet and pulled out a cardboard box from the bottom shelf.

It was sealed with the district's tape.

"The district shipped these after the board opened its review," she said. "Forty epinephrine pens, one for every classroom."

"Why are they in a closet?"

"Your father told me to hold them until the review finished." She slit the tape with her car key. "He said handing them out would look like an admission."

"Mom."

"I know."

She loaded them onto the supply cart with a roll of tape, a stack of zip bags and a pad of sticky notes.

On each note she wrote the same thing in her square nurse's handwriting: For anyone. No permission needed. Use it, then call 911.

"Take the east hall," she said. "Room by room. Put one in every teacher's hand."
