Chapter 15: Thanksgiving
She landed in Phoenix on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and took the shuttle up the mountain.
I met her at the stop outside the science building.
She came down the steps of the bus with one rolling bag and a big cardboard box tied with twine.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
There was more gray at her temples.
Her reading glasses were on her head, where she always forgot them.
She stopped in front of me.
For a second I thought she was going to hug me.
She didn't. She looked at my face.
"You cut your bangs," she said.
"In September."
"They look nice."
"Thanks."
My roommate had gone home to Lubbock for the week. Before she left she'd hugged me in the doorway for a full minute.
"Text me every two hours," she'd said. "If you don't, I'm calling the deputy."
So I texted her from the bus stop.
She's here. Nobody's crying yet.
She wrote back: the night is young
I showed my mother the campus. The library. The dining hall. The quad where my roommate had run off the guy with the phone.
She didn't bring up Kenzie.
She didn't bring up the boys.
She followed me up the hill to the observatory.
