Chapter 16: Confirmed

In the first week of December my advisor sent my frames to two other observatories.

One in Hawaii. One in Chile.

Then she told me to stop refreshing my email.

"A watched inbox never boils," she said.

"That's not the saying."

"It is in my office."

So I did finals.

I wrote a lab report on spectra at two in the morning.

Across the room my roommate fell asleep on her keyboard and typed a long line of the letter J with her cheek.

I took my calculus exam with my knee in a brace and Boone's old graph paper notes in my bag for luck.

I went to the dome four nights a week and watched my smudge sink lower toward the trees.

On the tenth of December, at eleven in the morning, my advisor called.

"Pennock. Come up the hill."

"Is it bad?"

"Why would I call you up the hill for bad? I'd tell you bad on the phone. Come up the hill."

I ran the whole way.

My knee hated me for it.

The director was in her office again, in his fleece vest, with a printout in his hand.

My advisor was standing, which she never did.

"Both confirmed," she said. "Hawaii last night, Chile this morning. Same position, same motion, same fuzz."
