Chapter 17: Home

I read Ford's text three times with the toothbrush in my mouth.

Then I called my mother.

"Kenzie's been coming over," I said.

There was a pause.

"Twice. I didn't let her in the second time. She stood on the porch and asked if she could still come to the party, because she always comes."

"What did you say?"

"I said the party is for the street, and she lives on the street."

"Mom."

"I'm not going to slam a door on a crying girl, Greer. But I'm also not going to let her run my house anymore. I'm learning. I'm slow."

I spat out the toothpaste.

"Can I bring someone?"

Another pause, longer.

"The boy with the truck?"

"His name is Boone."

"I know his name," my mother said. "Bring him. I'll make up the study."

We flew into Asheville on the twenty-second.

My roommate had gone home to Lubbock that morning.

She texted me forty pictures of her mother's Christmas cookies covering every flat surface of the house.

Every one was captioned THIS IS MY LIFE NOW.

Boone had never been east of Oklahoma.

He looked out the plane window at the Blue Ridge, blue and folded under the clouds, and didn't say anything for a whole minute.
