Addie's POV

They brought everyone in to the same dock, in the dark, under the white work lights of the marina.

The Halcyon's crew boat came first with my father and brothers, wrapped in gray blankets.

The captain's boat came second, with me kneeling on the deck holding my mother's good hand.

Her other wrist was broken.

A paramedic cut her sleeve off at the gangway, and she let him, with her face turned toward the water.

Beck came off last, shaking so hard that his teeth rattled.

I wanted to go to him, and I couldn't leave her yet.

"Mom," I said. "Mom, stay with me."

"I'm here."

"You're here."

"I could see you," she said. "In the boat. I could see your face. I thought, there she is."

My eyes burned.

An ambulance was backing down the ramp with its lights turning the wet planks red and white.

All the Haverills stood on the dock in a ring, the way they stand for a photograph.

Griffin had his arms wrapped round himself.

Landon sat on a piling with his head down, shivering.

Coralie stood in a blanket, hair plastered to her face, sobbing noisily into Roman's shoulder.
