In October, on a Sunday, I stood at the edge of the Pacific in a black swimsuit and a borrowed sweatshirt.
I was trying to make myself go in.
It was a small cove north of Malibu, with a gravel lot, a closed snack stand and nobody else for half a mile.
The water was gray-green and cold, and the waves came in low and lazy.
I had picked the day because the forecast said nothing at all.
Behind me, on the sand, my roommate sat in a folding chair with her clipboard, for no reason I could explain.
The old assistant lay in the next chair under his fur hat, in seventy-eight degrees, refusing to be talked out of it.
Beck's mother had brought a thermos, three blankets and a deck of cards, and had already beaten him twice.
Beck stood beside me with a towel over his arm.
His camera case sat in the sand ten feet away, shut.
"You said you don't shoot the ocean," I said.
"I'm not shooting. I'm holding a towel."
"Not for money. Not for me."
