Chapter 6: The Gauze

By the ninth day of the shoot, I had a crew of forty.

I also had a dry lakebed in the Mojave that went white to the horizon.

I loved it.

I loved the wind that tore the call sheets out of people's hands.

I loved the heat that cracked lips by noon.

I loved the actors who sat in the salt in costume without a word of complaint.

I did not love the sandwiches.

"These are a crime," my roommate said, holding one up. She was my line producer now, with a headset and a clipboard and a rule that nobody spoke to me before ten.

"Hold that thought."

A white van bounced across the flats and stopped in a cloud of dust.

The man who climbed out was sixty-one, in a pressed shirt and linen trousers, carrying a cooler in both arms.

He had run my father's calendar for twenty-two years.

"Miss Haverill," he said.

"Lenox."

"Of course. Miss Lenox." He set the cooler down. "I no longer work for your father. I thought I should bring lunch."

My eyes stung without warning.

"You quit?"

"The day after you did. It seemed rude to be late." He opened the cooler. "I know where every contract is buried, and I know what a crew eats at noon. I would like to be useful."

Inside were forty sandwiches on real bread.

My roommate looked at me with huge eyes, and I nodded.

"You're hired," she said. "Don't tell Beck, he'll want a raise."

"I heard that," Beck called from across the flats, and went on adjusting a reflector.

The old assistant straightened his cuffs.

"Is that the cinematographer? He has a gentle manner. I approve."
