Chapter 18: The Prince Takes His Leave
Prince Othriel's departure began with forty banners and ended with a hen coop.
Seravelle watched the first part from the palace steps with Ilysanne and Caedrin.
The banners were mounted on poles along the courtyard wall, gold on white, snapping in the wind.
Each one read: JOY TO THE HAPPY COUPLE.
"He did not change the lettering," said Ilysanne.
"They were the cheapest ones in the shop," Caedrin said.
Seravelle counted them twice.
Forty seemed a great many for a man nobody had accepted.
A woman in a green apron pushed through the gate with a handcart.
She stopped under the first banner and began untying it.
"I rented these for the wedding season," she told the nearest guard.
"A silver piece for the week, and nobody has paid me for the third day."
She worked down the line, pulling poles out of their brackets.
By the fifth banner, Othriel had come out onto the steps in his best white coat.
"What is she doing?" he demanded.
"Collecting her property, Highness," the guard said.
"These are my banners."
