Chapter 20: A Promise Without an Order
The steward arrived at breakfast with a tape measure, and Seravelle knew the morning was lost.
He knocked, opened the door, and stopped with one foot in the room.
Caedrin sat at her small table in his shirtsleeves, buttering toast.
Neither of them had expected the palace to find out before the toast.
"Highness, Sir Caedrin, congratulations," said the steward.
"On what?" asked Seravelle.
"The engagement."
"There is no engagement."
The steward looked at the tape in his hand, then at the two cups on the table.
"The household has been told a betrothal sash is wanted by Friday," he said.
"Who told the household?" asked Seravelle.
"A maid saw the door closed and the light under it, Highness."
"She said nothing, and she told half the castle," said the steward.
Caedrin put his knife down.
"I decline to be measured," he said.
The steward measured his shoulders anyway, because the tape was already out.
He wrote down a number and showed it to nobody.
"Thank you, Sir Caedrin," he said.
"We will embroider both your initials."
