Chapter 8: The Wrong Woman in the Tower

Ilysanne was waiting on the landing with a rope around her waist.

Seravelle stopped beside Caedrin, still holding the folded green dress.

"Please tell me that is not for me," she said.

Her sister looked at the open window behind her.

A brown cloak lay over the sill, its hem fluttering outside.

"I dropped my traveling cloak," Ilysanne explained.

"The innkeeper said there was a tower stair."

Caedrin studied the rope, which passed beneath a heavy table.

"There is also a kitchen door," he observed.

"The cloak is on the kitchen roof," Ilysanne told him.

Seravelle moved to the window and looked down.

The cloak covered a basket beside the sloping tiles.

A cat had taken possession of its warmest fold.

"We could ask somebody downstairs," Seravelle suggested.

Her sister looked at her with visible irritation.

"I am capable of retrieving a cloak," she replied.

Seravelle recognized the tone before she recognized the mistake.

She stepped away from the window and held out her hands.

"How may I help?" she asked.

Ilysanne gave her the loose end of the rope.

Caedrin tested the table's weight before taking the other side.

The elder princess lowered an empty basket toward the roof.

She intended to catch the cloak and pull it upward.

The cat stepped into the basket before she could move it.

They lifted one entirely unworried passenger to the windowsill.
