Chapter 11: Both

Gwen's POV

The third-year call took Iolo away from me across the heather at a dead run, and I stood in the ruined bothy in the rain with a gold jacket in my arms.

Cadoc had come down off the ridge and dropped it there.

It was a spare coat he had hidden under a stone, and he had left it for me without a word.

I dressed in it.

It came to my knees.

I ran back toward the college behind the two of them, my bare feet cut and my lungs burning.

The Hall stood lit from end to end when we reached it, every window a gold square against the dark.

The third-years were crowding in at the great doors, wet and breathless from the moor, with the masters standing on either side.

"Stay out of the light," Cadoc said in my ear.

"What's happening?" I said.

"The gate. Look at the gate."

I looked.

The college gate stood across the quad, a black arch of slate with a lantern on either side.

The chain lay across the step, off its hook.

It was exactly as it had been on the first morning.

"Somebody's left it open," I said.

"Somebody has been let in," said Iolo.

He had come up silently behind me, in a quarry coat pulled over his bare chest.

I could hear his pulse from where I stood.
