Chapter 18: First Snow
Gwen's POV
We found the gate-book in the snow at the foot of the quarry road, face down, with its chain cut.
Somebody had torn out the page.
It was the page with my name on it.
Gwyn Treharne, cousin, northern valley. Admitted.
The older Penhallow son had taken the proof that the Warden had let me in.
"Why?" I said.
"So the Warden can't swear he knew," said Iolo.
"He wants him to look like a man who was tricked," said Cadoc. "Or a man who lied."
"Or a man who isn't believed," said Iolo.
We stood in the whirling white at the foot of the road, three of us in dark coats, with the book in my hands and the college a black shape above.
Snow lay on Cadoc's shoulders and Iolo's hair.
It sat on my eyelashes.
I wiped it off with my glove and did not feel the cold.
"We can't catch him tonight," Iolo said. "He knows the hill and he knows the quarry. He'll go to ground."
"Then we wait for him to come."
"At the Rite?" said Cadoc.
"No," I said. "Tomorrow. The night before. He'll come to the dormitory because he thinks that's where I'll be."
"Then be somewhere else," said Iolo.
I looked at him.
He did not smile.
He did not need to.
He said, "The hut."
The slate hut on the quarry rim had a stove, a bed and a long flat shelf.
Iolo lit the fire in four minutes with wood he had stacked there himself.
Cadoc brought blankets from the Captain's room, six of them, and a jug of hot spiced wine that had the whole Hall's kitchen smell on it.
