Chapter 19: Mark
The bell stopped.
Nobody came.
We lay in the nest of blankets with our breath held, three of us, listening to the snow and a creak somewhere that was only the roof settling.
Then Iolo let out his breath.
"The wind," he said. "It swings the bell on its chain."
"You're sure?"
"No."
Cadoc laughed, low, against my hair.
"Then we're not leaving," he said.
I rolled onto my back between them.
The fire had burned down to a red glow, and the slate shelf stood dark against the wall.
I could see both their faces in the light from the coals.
Cadoc was flushed and golden, a gleam of sweat in the hollow of his throat.
Iolo was pale and exact, his dark hair stuck to his temple, his grey eyes wide open.
"I want to do something," I said.
"Anything," said Cadoc.
"Not for the Rite. Not for the law. Because I want to."
"Tell us," said Iolo.
I sat up.
I touched the mark on my left shoulder, the shallow crescent of Cadoc's teeth, healed to a pale pink ridge.
"This is yours," I said to Cadoc.
"Yes," he said.
"I asked for it."
"I know," he said.
"I want to give you one," I said. "And I want to give you one."
I turned my head.
Iolo had gone completely still.
"Gwenllian," he said.
"Hands behind you."
I took Cadoc first.
I knelt over his lap, facing him, and I put my palms on his broad chest and pushed him gently back against the slate bench until he lay with his shoulders on the stone and his arms flung wide.
