Chapter 21: The Offer

I told him in the car.

We were on Route 9 coming back from Dunmore, with the heater rattling and Cleo's mother's leftovers on the back seat in four containers.

I held out my phone to Dane at a red light.

He read the email twice.

"Doctoral place," he said. "Fully funded. At the Eastbrook Institute."

"It's the best program in the country for what I do."

"I know. I've read the faculty list. I read it in October."

I stared at him.

"That's not strange," Dane said. "It's a very well-known program."

"You read the faculty list of a mathematics institute."

"I read everything about you. I've told you that."

The light turned green.

He drove.

Eastbrook was three states away.

It started next September, and before the next mile marker I had decided, without telling myself, exactly what I was going to say.

"You should take it," Dane said.

I turned my head.

"You should say yes. It's the thing you were born to do. It's a once-in-a-lifetime." His voice was level and gentle. "I'll go with you. Or I'll stay in Ashmont until you come back for breaks. Whichever is easier. You pick."
