We got married a second time on the Saturday before Christmas, at eleven in the morning, in the same annex with the same glass window.

The clerk was the same woman.

She looked up when we came in, and for the first time in her professional life, she smiled.

"Back so soon?" she said.

"We read the fine print," I said.

There were eleven of us this time.

Cleo stood up as my witness in a green velvet dress and a hairnet she had forgotten to take off, and nobody told her.

Her parents sat in the front row with the dog, who had been smuggled in under her father's coat.

The baker came with a box of pastries.

The chair of the mathematics department brought her husband.

And in the very last row, in a black overcoat, with his hat in his lap and his cane against the wall, sat Orrin Haverly.

I hadn't invited him.

Dane had.

He'd told me on Wednesday, in the kitchen, with a spatula in his hand.

"He's my grandfather, and I'm angry at him, and I'd like him to see it. He doesn't speak. He doesn't come to the reception. He sits at the back."

I'd looked at him a long time.

"Is that what you want?" I said.

"Yes."

"Then he can sit."

The magistrate was the same bored man.

He opened his book and found his place, and then he glanced up at the two of us and stopped, and put the book down.

"Is there anything you'd like to say?" he asked. "Some people write their own."
