Chapter 9: The Pit
The chair tipped.
My stomach went up into my throat.
I grabbed for the rail and caught air.
Then the whole chair jerked backward so hard my teeth clicked.
Damian's hands were gone from the handles.
Someone else's were on them.
Elias dragged the chair three feet back from the edge and set the brakes.
He crouched in front of me.
He touched my face, my shoulders, my knees.
"Are you hurt?"
I shook my head.
He stood up.
Damian was backing toward the stage stairs with both hands raised and a grin on his face.
"Relax, brother. It was a joke. She's family now."
Elias didn't answer.
He crossed the aisle.
Damian threw the first punch.
Elias let it glance off his shoulder and hit him once in the stomach.
Damian folded.
Elias took him by the back of his collar and hauled him up the stage stairs into the white light.
Twenty girls in tutus scattered to the wings.
Nobody left.
They all watched from the curtains.
Elias threw his brother down on the boards in the middle of Giselle's grave.
Damian rolled onto his back, gasping.
"Forty witnesses," Elias said. "Every one of them has my number now."
"Nobody's going to say a word against a Wolfe."
"I'm a Wolfe."
Elias hit him in the face.
Damian's head bounced off the stage.
"You bought her in a box."
He hit him again.
Blood ran out of Damian's nose onto the painted floor.
"You sent a man to stand over her while she slept."
Elias pulled his fist back a third time.
"Elias."
My voice cracked across the whole theater.
He stopped.
He looked at me in the chair at the bottom of the stage.
I shook my head.
Not here.
Not yet.
Elias lowered his hand.
He reached into Damian's jacket and took out his phone.
Damian spat blood.
"That's mine."
"Nothing is yours anymore," Elias said. "You'll get a seat for the premiere. Front row. I want you to see it."
