Chapter 16: The Price

Remo asked to meet me at dawn in the loading yard on Dock Street.

Massimo had woken me at four with his warning: the doors of the Saturday wedding room locked from outside, and my grandfather was meant to be inside when they did.

He wanted to go to the yard in my place.

I said Remo would only talk to me, and that I wanted to hear the trap from Remo's own mouth.

I told Massimo I would go alone to the yard, and he said he would be on the roof of the second building with a rifle.

I told him that was fair.

The gulls were screaming over the water when I walked out between the four buildings.

Remo stood by the old crane with a leather satchel at his feet.

He had not shaved.

His good gray coat was soaked through, and there were two bruises on his jaw that had not been there on Thursday.

"Carmine's men," he said, before I asked. "They think I talked."

"Did you?"

"Not yet."

I stopped an arm's length away.

"You called Massimo, so you want something," I said. "Say it."

"My life." He swallowed. "A plane ticket. Enough to start over somewhere that isn't here."

"And in exchange?"

He nudged the satchel with his toe.

"Cinzia's real books. Every shipment, every payoff, every judge Carmine bought for twenty years. She kept them in my safe, in my name, so that if the feds ever came they would find me."
