Chapter 17: The Parish Hall
Carmine asked for a sit-down on neutral ground, and my grandfather chose the parish hall of San Rocco.
Massimo had spent the rest of that morning with Cinzia's seating card, a floor plan of the Cammarata club and a pencil.
He said the sticking door was the east service door, the only way out of the banquet room that Carmine's men would not have to unlock.
My grandfather said that if Carmine wanted to talk before Saturday, we would listen and give nothing away.
The hall had a linoleum floor, a coffee urn, and a long folding table with a crucifix on the wall above it.
Nobody can draw a gun in front of a crucifix, my grandfather said.
Massimo, who had checked the hall twice, said that was optimistic.
Carmine came at noon with one man, and left him by the door.
He sat down across from me and laid his gold watch on the table.
"Two chairs," he said. "Aurelio, you are not going to say anything?"
"This is her table," said my grandfather.
Carmine's eyes came back to me.
"Good," he said. "Then I'll say it plainly. You are twenty-six years old and you own three buildings and a grudge. Saturday, you will be one girl in a room of old men who remember your mother. Walk away today and I will see that you want for nothing."
"Walk away to where?"
"Anywhere. I'll even give you the friend back." He tilted his head. "Cinzia was in tears last night. She does love you."
"She told me the tests were an act of love."
