Chapter 18: The Wedding

The wedding was for four hundred guests, with a string quartet and ice swans on every table.

I walked in at eight in the green dress, with my grandfather on my arm.

Every family head in the state had come.

Men with white hair and thick rings turned on their chairs as we passed, and the room went quiet in a ripple.

Massimo walked a pace behind us.

Remo followed three steps behind him, between two of my grandfather's men, in a borrowed suit that did not fit.

Cinzia stood at the head of the room in a gown the color of champagne, with a microphone in her hand.

She saw me, and her smile did not slip once.

"Friends," she said. "Before we toast the bride, I want to welcome someone very dear to me."

She held out her hand.

"My oldest friend. Fiora."

Four hundred people looked at me.

"Come up, Fio," she said, in English. "Say hello. She's been through a terrible time, everyone. She's confused about who she is, and we love her anyway."

Somebody laughed politely at the back.

I climbed the three steps to the dais.

I took the microphone out of her hand, gently, and she let me.

"Thank you, Cinzia," I said in Sicilian, loud enough for the back wall. "You've been confused about me for fourteen years. I'd like to clear it up."

The quartet stopped.

I looked down at the room.

"A dozen men here fought in my grandfather's war. They know my mother's name. I'd like them to hear the rest from someone who wasn't there."
