Chapter 14: The One-Armed Chair
The woman in the gray blazer stood up, and the principal stopped talking.
"I heard that story in December," she said.
She did not raise her voice.
She had interviewed nine hundred applicants over the years, and she knew how to be heard in a quiet room.
"In a coffee shop on Main Street, from a girl in a plain sweater."
"The vending machine, the crackers, the chair with one arm."
"And the paragraph about the aunt who slept on the floor."
"Which was just read to us by a different girl, who left it out."
The gym made a sound like a held breath coming out.
Camille's hand went to her throat.
"She's lying," she said into the microphone.
It rang off the cinderblock.
"She's bitter. She didn't get in anywhere, and she's been saying I stole it for weeks. Ask my mom."
She looked down at the second row.
"Mom?"
My mother half rose, then sat down again.
"I got in," I said.
I did not use a microphone.
I did not need one.
"Stanford offered me the Aldridge Scholarship in December. Harvard admitted me at five o'clock, the same minute it admitted Camille. I declined it on the train."
