Chapter 17: Devin's Fear

Devin's POV

We let the man go out the way he came in, with Kate's terms in his ear.

Wednesday night, at the house, with the original page in his hand, or he could explain the lock picks to the deputy himself.

He said yes too fast.

I didn't trust it, and I said so, and Kate said she didn't either, which was why she'd said Wednesday and not tonight.

Then we walked her home, the three of us.

She fell asleep in the garage bed between us before I'd finished taking off my boots.

I lay awake.

That's my habit.

Eight years on an ambulance will do it.

So will living next door to a woman who was dying and didn't want you to know you knew.

At one in the morning I turned over, and Cal's side of the mattress was cold.

I got up without waking her.

I found him on the back steps with his laptop on his knees and the screen turned low.

He didn't hide it.

That was the worst part.

He just tilted it toward me and let me read.
