Chapter 19: Stefan's Postcards
Stefan's POV
I lay in the snow with nothing on and watched Verena walk to the gate in a towel.
I am a man who always has something to say.
I had nothing.
The driver raised the camera higher.
She stopped an arm's length from the fence and held up the card the housekeeper had given her.
"Is it recording?" she asked.
He did not answer.
"I hope so. Because this is for your employer."
She held the card up to the lens.
"That's his own handwriting," she said. "That's his own paper. He paid my staff to walk out of my house. Film that, and send him both files together."
The driver lowered the camera an inch.
He was a thin man with a tired face, and he looked past her at the three of us in the drift, and then back at her.
"I only drive, Fräulein," he said.
"Then drive."
He looked at the card again.
Then he turned and walked back to the snowcat, and I heard the engine start.
Verena stood at the fence until the lights were gone.
Then she turned around and came back through the snow with her chin up and the towel held tight in one fist.
Her feet must have been frozen.
I got up and put my own towel round her shoulders.
"I thought you were going to ask him in for soup," I said.
"I thought about it."
It was the only joke I got out, and she smiled.
Later, when the others were asleep, I went up to the attic with a candle stub.
My box was under the eaves, behind the old skis.
It was a shoebox, soft at the corners, and it held every postcard Verena had ever sent to the lodge.
Rome, Lisbon, a ferry in Greece, a bad photograph of Prague.
She had written them to her brother, and at the bottom of every one she had added a line to us.
