Chapter 22: Live

Carlton found his sister on the second level of the hospital garage, next to her white SUV.

I was thirty feet away with Gabe and Jessa, waiting for the elevator.

I heard him before I saw him.

"Delete it," he said. "Delete it right now, Teagan."

"I can't. It's live."

"Then end it!"

"If I end it, it just goes to the replay."

She still had the phone up, and she was shaking so badly that the ring light jittered on her face.

Carlton grabbed for the phone, and Teagan swung it out of his reach.

He stopped and stared at her.

"You've been filming my life for six years," he said. "You can't lose one video?"

"Mom told me not to."

"Mom tells everybody everything. You're supposed to be the smart one."

I heard Jessa draw a breath beside me.

I put a hand on her arm.

"Let it play," Gabe said quietly. "He's doing it to himself."

On the phone's screen, the comments scrolled past in a white blur.

I could read the ones at the top.

Is he serious?

She put that on the INTERNET?

Mom is in handcuffs, y'all.

Teagan's voice had gone small.

"Carlton. Did you really pay the notary?"

"What does that matter?"

"I'm asking."

"Mom said it was easier than arguing with her," Carlton said.

"Claire never reads anything. She signs what's in front of her."

"It was a couple thousand dollars, Teagan, and it saved everyone a mess."

A silence opened on the screen.

Then a line of text appeared across the top of Teagan's phone.
