I folded Jessa's note small and put it in my pocket before I walked back to the table.

Carlton had already left with his mother.

Teagan caught up with us in the parking lot, phone raised and ring light clipped to the case.

"Claire! Hi! One question for the audience."

"No," Gabe said.

"It's not for you. You're not even in the family anymore." She swung the lens back to me. "Are you coming to Mom's gala? Because she has a little video for you."

"What kind of video?"

"A tribute." She smiled. "It's very touching. It's about mental health."

I stood still.

"Teagan," I said, "put the phone down."

"I'm just so worried about you," she said, and her voice went soft for the camera. "We all are."

Gabe stepped between us, not touching her, only standing there.

"Turn it off," he said. "Or I'll tell your sponsors where you got your home tour footage."

She blinked.

The red light went out.

"You're a bully," Teagan said, and she walked off to her white SUV with her heels clicking.

Gabe turned around.

"She's lying about the footage," he said. "I haven't got anything on her. It was a guess."

"It worked."

"She's twenty-nine and has never been off camera in her life. Everyone has something."

We got into his truck.

I took out the note, and I read it again with my thumb on the dent where the pencil had pressed.
