Chapter 9: On His Knees

"How did you find me?" I said.

Carlton held up his phone, and the screen was a map with a blue dot on a gravel road.

"The family plan, Claire. Your location's been on since we married."

I had forgotten.

I turned location sharing off right there in the rain, with one cold thumb.

In the passenger seat of his truck, a pale shape moved behind the windshield.

Teagan had her phone propped on the dash, and the light on it was red.

"You brought her," I said.

"She wouldn't stay home."

"Is she live?"

"Does it matter?"

Gabe had stopped six feet behind my left shoulder, exactly where he'd said he would be.

He didn't say anything.

I looked at the phone in the window and decided it didn't matter at all.

"Five minutes," I said. "Then I'm walking."

Carlton came around the front of the truck.

The headlights lit the rain in front of him in long gold threads.

He went down on one knee in the wet gravel, his good khakis soaked through, and he looked up at me.

"I'm so sorry."

I waited.

"I made a mess. I know. I was a coward about it. I let Mom run everything, and I let Jessa think there was a future, and I let you find out the worst way a person can. All of it's on me."

"Is it."

"I'll end it. I'll send Jessa to her aunt in Zanesville after the baby comes. I'll pay for everything. I just want my wife."

"You want your wife."

"I want us back."

It was a good speech.

He had given a version of it at our wedding, and again on our fourth anniversary when I found a hotel receipt.
