Chapter 15: The Chairman's Study

The chairman's study was at the top of the east wing, with a green leather desk, a wall of ledgers and a window onto the cold garden.

It was six in the morning.

Ye-rin stood on the carpet in yesterday's blouse, with salt still drying in her hair.

Seo-jun stood beside her with his hands at his sides.

The chairman had been sitting behind the desk when they came in, with the cane across his knees and a pot of tea between his hands.

He did not offer them any.

"The inn was clean?" he said.

"What do you want?" said Seo-jun.

"I want to say a few things before they are said by someone less patient than me." The chairman set the pot down. "I know who you are."

Ye-rin felt Seo-jun stop breathing.

"Han Seo-jun," said the old man pleasantly. "Class 2-3. A cowlick and a missing tooth. You had it written on your pencil case in blue, and you wouldn't be parted from it in the hospital. I saw it the first morning, and I took you out of that ward myself."

"You never said."

"Nor did you."

"Why?" Seo-jun's voice was quite flat. "Why raise me?"

"Because your father was my friend," said the chairman. "And because if I had left a Han boy in the world to grow up in an orphanage, someone would have told him things. A boy raised as a Ryu cannot be told what he already is."
