Chapter 22: The Envelope
Ye-rin watched her mother go down the Mapo stairs with the little suitcase, and did not call after her.

Then she sat on the top step in the cold with the laundry line creaking overhead and slid the rubber band off the envelope.
Inside were thirty or forty sheets of lined paper, covered in her mother's small cramped hand.

I was thirty years old and the head cook of the Haeseong Hotel kitchen.
The night of the strike the staff stayed to cook for the guests because Mr.
Han asked it of us.

At ten o'clock your lips went blue.
I picked you up and ran for the service stair. Your father was already dead of his lung three months by then.
