Chapter 25: The Trucks
"Then I'll be there," I said. "Bring your speech. I'll bring the wires."
My father walked out of his own library and left us standing under the moose head.
Marigold went after him in her cashmere wrap.
"Daddy. Daddy, wait."
The front door slammed on her.
She stood in the hall with her hand on the knob, then went upstairs without looking at us.
On Saturday morning, at ten past nine, the foreman called me.
"Your sister's robbing the building," he said. "Thought you'd want to watch."
A moving van was backed up to the front doors of the Cromwell Building, under my father's name in brass.
Four movers were carrying things down the front steps.
The walnut boardroom table, in two pieces, wrapped in blankets.
The brass ship's clock from the lobby.
And last, between two men, the oil painting of the harbor at dawn that had hung behind the reception desk my whole life.
My mother had bought it at a gallery in Fells Point the year the building opened.
Marigold stood on the sidewalk in jeans and a white blazer with a clipboard, directing.
