Chapter 25: The Notice

The Registry of Hollowbrook opened its doors at the third bell, and Max walked through them alive.

He walked in the middle of three men.

James was on his left with his hands in his pockets, whistling.

Joel was on his right in his iron-grey cloak, looking at nobody.

Raven came a pace behind with the black book open in one hand and a heavy green ledger under his other arm.

The clerks at the long desks stopped writing.

The registrar sat at the high bench under the Charter of Houses.

She was a small old woman with ink on her cuffs, and she looked at Max for a long moment over her spectacles.

"You are the omega of Greywater," she said.

"I am."

"My records say you died this morning."

"Your records are wrong."

"The notice carries the guardian's seal."

"Then the guardian is wrong too."

Mary had come in behind them, with Linda on her arm.

Linda wore gloves again, buttoned to the elbow, and her face was white.

Mary's face was soft and wet.

"Oh, my love," she said. "Registrar, I am so glad to see him standing. The healer told me last night that he had collapsed and would not wake. I wrote in my grief. Any mother would have done the same."

"Which healer?"

"The one who attends us."

The registrar turned a page.

"Bring him."

The healer was already in the building.

Raven had made sure of that at dawn, with two Rydes guards and a very polite note.

He stood against the wall now, grey and sweating, and said that he had told the lady Mary nothing of the kind.

"You said he was dying," said Mary.

"I said nothing. I never saw him."

"Then who is lying?" asked the registrar.

Max set the green ledger on the bench.

"This is in Mary's hand," he said. "It was in a strongbox behind the third rack in her wine cellar. James's grooms carried it out at dawn."

"Open it."

Max opened it to the page that Raven had marked with a strip of cloth.

Column R was twenty silver a night, and it had the dates of his three nights beside it.
