Chapter 18: What Lorna Knew
I got into the passenger seat of Lorna's coupe and moved her suitcase onto my lap.
It was heavy.
She had packed for a long time.
"Where are you going?" I said.
"The room over the bakery. She said I could have it until the fall." Lorna kept both hands on the wheel. "I wanted to be gone before Sunday. I didn't want you to have to look at me while Dad did it."
"Tell me about March."
She breathed in and out through her nose, and her mascara had already run.
"Mom called me into the sewing room. It was the middle of the month. She shut the door."
"Go on."
"She said the sixth wedding would be the last one, and she wouldn't pay for any more vetoes. She said the envelopes would stop the first of April." Lorna wiped her face with the heel of her hand. "She said it nicely. She said I'd be fine, I had a degree."
I did not say anything.
"I went straight to Dad's study. I told him." She stared at the steering wheel. "I thought he'd be upset. He wasn't upset. He went very quiet and he said, then we have until Saturday."
"Until Saturday for what?"
"I didn't know. I swear I didn't know until the church." She turned to look at me. "He started saying Mom wasn't herself. He said it to Cal, and to the pastor, and to Grandma, and he told me to say it, too."
"Did you?"
"Once. To the florist." She swallowed. "Then Mom dropped on the floor in front of me, Dee. And the first thing in my head was, now nobody has to pay."
