Chapter 6: The Original

Marcy held her phone out with both hands.

"In November Roxanne sent me a file by mistake," she said. "She meant it for someone else. She texted me right after, 'Ignore that.'"

"Did you open it?"

"No. I never opened it. I was scared to."

Her chin shook.

"But I saw her laptop one night at her place. She had two windows side by side."

She tapped the screen and handed me the phone.

It was a video from her camera roll, shaky, just a brief clip.

I recognized the pale blue of Roxanne's kitchen wall.

A laptop sat open on her table, and a hand I knew better than my own moved a mouse.

On the left was the warehouse gate, the man in the long black coat, turning to the light.

On the right was the same frame, with a different man's face under the coat.

He was heavy, with a flat nose and a shaved head.

I knew him.

He had walked into the chapel behind Gwen and stood against the wall with his hands folded.

Marcello had come around the island, and I held the phone up so he could see.

"That's Gwen's father's man," I said.

"Yes." His voice was rough. "That's his brother-in-law."

"You're sure."

"I've sat across a table from him for six years."

I looked at the left side of the screen again, and then at Marcello, and I couldn't get my breath.

The jaw was wrong. The shoulders were wrong. The hand that shut the van doors had no ring.

"Is the real one on the drive?" I said.

"Give it to me."

He opened the laptop and typed rapidly.

Then he turned it around.

Inside the same file was a hidden folder with the clean, unedited footage.

In it, the man who shut the van doors on my brother had a flat nose and no hair.

The picture went to snow again.

I sat down on the kitchen floor.

I didn't decide to. My legs went, and I was on the cold tile with the phone in my lap.

Eli had kicked.

My little brother had kicked, and nobody had come, and for three years I had believed the wrong man did it.
