Elaine stood beside the returning taxi, holding her phone toward the place where the house had been.
She lowered it when she saw us.
"Where is it?" she asked.
Rupert lifted one arm toward the field.
The velvet rope uncurled and landed in a puddle.
My aunt looked at it before she looked at Pippa's feet.
"That rope was hired."
The driver came around the car to open the boot.
He glanced at the field, then at Elaine's case.
"Different coat work out?" he asked.
My aunt made a sound suggesting that ordinary conversation was an assault.
Pippa walked past her and set down her bag.
Elaine watched the slippers cross the wet road.
"You're all right, then."
"Yes," Pippa said.
"Hester returned the key."
My aunt took a careful breath.
