Rosamund arrived while we were arguing about whether the yellow socks should go in my bag or Pippa's.
The woman at the counter rang the room to say we had a visitor.
"She's waiting outside," she added.
"Says there's no hurry."
Pippa and I looked at each other.
We had enough time to put on our shoes properly.
That alone made the invitation feel extravagant.
Rosamund sat on the low garden wall with her traveling bag beside her.
The young ghost stood on the pavement reading a bus timetable.
He held it at arm's length as if the small print had taken something from him personally.
"He doesn't need to catch the bus," Rosamund told us.
"He likes knowing where it goes."
I sat beside her without being offered the best place.
