Chapter 17: The Ball
The Midsummer Ball was held in the Hall of Oranges, under a thousand candles.
I wore the red velvet.
The tailor had finished it in nine days.
He had delivered it with the face of a man who had decided to be good.

He was in black velvet, with the chain of office.
He had spent the last three minutes looking at the neckline of my dress.
"A woman who is going to be asked to dance forty times," he said, "and will be taken home after the second."
