Chapter 25: Thirty Days
My father put both hands flat on the table.
"You sold it."
"I'm Vice President of Operations," Arabella said. "I don't need your permission to sell a bad loan."
"To whom?"
"A fund in Boston. They buy paper like that. They paid full price, in cash, in an hour."
"They don't want three hundred eighty thousand dollars, Daddy. They want the waterfront. It's worth eleven million to a developer."
She looked at me down the table.
"You wanted something torn up? Ask them."
My father stood.
For a second I thought he was going to go to her, out of habit.
He didn't.
He walked out of the dining room and onto the porch, and stood there with his back to all of us, looking at the sea.
"I'll call the fund in the morning," he said to me. "I'll buy it back. Whatever they want."
"They won't sell. They want the land."
I stood up, and Seth stood up with me.
Arabella didn't look at us when we left.
She was turning Archer's ring around and around on her finger.
Hugo called the fund at eight on Monday morning.
