Chapter 29: The Rail
The parking lot was very bright.
"What did you say?" I said.
Arabella laughed.
"You heard me. You always hear everything. That was the whole trick of you."
"You came in that front door at seventeen with your little drawings in a box, and you slept in your shoes, and Mom cried for a week."
"And I watched you. I was sixteen, and I watched you, and I saw it in a day."
"Saw what?"
"You can't stand to lose. Not anything. Not a spelling test. Not a seat at dinner."
She stepped closer.
"So I gave you things to lose."
"Every time I cried, you worked another night. Every time I took something, you went and earned it back, and it took a little more out of you."
"Two years at that company, and you looked forty. I counted the gray hairs."
I couldn't move.
It was my office, at two in the morning.
It was the desk under my cheek.
"The yacht was supposed to be the last push," Arabella said. "In front of everyone. You'd come up out of the water screaming, and you'd never stop fighting me again, not for one day, and somebody like you doesn't make it to thirty."
