Chapter 17: Lucinda's Pup
I let her in.
It's the Maiden's House. Everybody comes in.
She sat on the cot by the fire with her coat pulled tight around her and her knees together.
I made her tea.
I didn't make it the way she liked it. I didn't know how she liked it, and I didn't care.
"How far along?" I asked.
"Seven weeks."
"Does Piers know?"
She shook her head and pressed a hand to her mouth.
"I'm afraid to tell him. You know what they do in the palace. With the bottle."
She looked up at me through wet lashes.
"You're the only one who'd understand."
I sat down across from her.

Lucinda smelled of rosewater.
Under the rosewater, dry herbs.
