Chapter 25: Harvest Moon
I looked down at the message on the screen.
Then I handed the phone back to the twin.
"Good," I said.
All three of them stared at me.
"Good?" my father said.
"She'll be standing beside his chair with the cup in her own hands. In front of every pack on the lake."
"So we stop her before she gets there," the left twin said.
"And she says she was carrying wine. And next year she tries again, somewhere we're not."
I got into the car.
"No. This time she finishes the walk."
The King Father didn't like it.
Then he did.
He sat in his armchair in the garden rooms with a blanket on his knees, still gray from the garden, and listened to all of it.
When I finished, he was smiling. It wasn't a nice smile.
"She'll bring it to me," he said. "And I'll lift it."
"Dad, no," Auden said.
"I'll lift it to my lips, son. You'll be standing right there. You can take it off me."
"And if I'm a second late?"
"Then you've got twenty vials and a very good arm."
He patted his son's knee.
