Chapter 25: The Seating Chart

"I'll have the Drake strike him off," Bruna said. "One email. They hate scandal more than they hate me."

"I'll do it quieter," Damiano said.

"Leave him," I said.

They both looked at me.

My father put his fork down on his burned steak.

"Dess. That man sent you a text about me last night."

"I know, Dad."

"And you want him at my party."

"I want him where four hundred people can see his face," I said. "He's been hiding in the dark for a week."

I picked up my phone and called Danielle.

She answered on the first ring, which told me she'd been waiting for it.

"I didn't have a choice," she said.

"Tell me."

"He called from a number I didn't know. He said put his name on the list or he'd come to the hotel."

"He says he'll fix everything Saturday. He says once the room sees what you are, his mother takes him back."

"Is he right?"

"I don't know what he's got," Danielle said. "But he wants to be in that ballroom more than he wants to breathe."

"Then bring him," I said, and hung up.

On Thursday the seating chart covered my father's dining table at Kinnear Hall.

The table was the only big thing left in the room.
