Chapter 28: Visiting Hours
"Not yet," I said.
Bruna lowered the phone.
"She'll ask again."
"I know," I said. "Let her."
I went on the thirtieth of October, the day before Halloween.
Cook County Jail sits behind a long wall at Twenty-Sixth and California.
I'd driven past it all summer.
I'd never once gone in.
A guard with a clipboard took my license and my bag and the diamond off my right hand.
"Jewelry goes in the locker," she said.
"It's my mother's."
"Then it'll be safe in the locker," she said, not unkindly.
The visiting room was a row of steel stools in front of thick glass, with a black phone on the wall at every window.
It smelled like bleach and old coffee.
The light hummed.
I sat on the stool at window eleven and waited, and I thought about a different room.
A white room on Lake Geneva with a window in the door.
A chair by the bed where Danielle used to sit in pink, with a box of chocolates on her knees.
