Chapter 31: Spring
Courtroom 600 was full by nine-thirty on the twenty-ninth of April.
Reporters filled the back two rows.
The Channel Nine woman who'd been at the Daley Center in May had a seat on the aisle.
I sat in the front row behind the prosecutor's table, seven months pregnant, in a dark green dress that didn't button anymore.
Damiano sat on my left.
My father sat on my right, holding my hand.
Bruna sat at the end with a legal pad she wasn't writing on.
Across the aisle, in the second row, Mrs. Ambler sat by herself in gray.
Her husband hadn't come.
They brought Rhett in through the side door at ten.
He wore a tan jumpsuit and a chain at the waist.
His blond hair had been cut short by somebody who didn't care.
The tan was long gone, and his face had the gray, puffy look of a man who didn't sleep.
He looked at the gallery once.
He saw his mother, and then he saw me, and his eyes went to my stomach and stayed there.
Then a deputy put a hand on his shoulder and sat him down.
The judge was a heavy, quiet man with half-glasses who had read everything twice.
He said so.
"The court has the record," he said. "All of it. I'll hear from the victims now."
