Chapter 23: St. Brigid's

Mabel didn't have to think about it.

"St. Brigid's," she said.

The trustee's eyebrows went up even higher.

"The children's home?"

"The boiler's patched. It's going to break again. The windows leak. The beds are older than my dad." Mabel counted on her fingers. "The little kids don't have winter boots. The director buys crayons with her own money."

Fern had stopped crying.

She was staring at Mabel with her mouth slightly open.

"I'd like a new boiler," Mabel said. "And windows. And beds. And coats every winter, with the tags on, so nobody can steal them. And money for the director that only the director can spend."

The trustee looked at her for a long moment.

Then he took a small notebook out of his overcoat and wrote it all down.

"That's it?" he said.

Mabel thought.

"And a goat," she said. "For the yard. Grandpa will pick it."

The trustee wrote that down too.

The new boiler went in at the end of March.

The windows went in during April.

By May, St. Brigid's had sixty new beds with real mattresses, a fridge that closed, and a director who walked around the building humming.
