On Saturday, the goat came up the stairs first.
Mabel heard her before she saw her.
Hooves on the stairwell, three floors down, and Grandpa's voice rumbling, "Slow down. Slow down. You don't even know where we're going."
Then the old lady across the hall opened her door to see what the noise was.
She found a brown-and-white goat on the landing, chewing her doormat.
"Morning," said Grandpa, puffing up the last step behind it.
The old lady looked at the goat.
She looked at Grandpa.
"Is it her birthday again?"
"Redo," said Grandpa. "The first one got interrupted."
"Good," said the old lady, and shut her door.
The goat ate the rest of the doormat.
By noon, the apartment was so full that the walls seemed to lean out.
The doctor came in scrubs, straight from a shift.
He fell asleep in the armchair until Fern put a party hat on him.
The cop came off duty with an ice-cream cake from the place on Clark Street.
He brought a second one too, "in case the goat gets the first one."
The third brother came with Grandpa, carrying a box that didn't smoke at all.
The girl from Galena came at one, with her grandmother.
Her grandmother sat with Fern in the kitchen and said "Oh, my word," every time the goat went by.
The girl had brought a present wrapped in newspaper.
She held it out to Mabel shyly, with both hands.
