Chapter 12: Before Sunrise

I was out of the tub and into my clothes in three minutes.

Maddox was waiting at the foot of the stairs with his phone in his hand.

"Rule two," he said. "Before I do anything, I'm telling you. My people are already outside her building."

"Good," I said. "Tell them to wait for me."

"Lena."

"Thank you for telling me first."

His mouth moved slightly, and I could not have said whether it was a smile.

Christian drove.

Dorian rode in front with his hood up and his phone off, and Maddox sat beside me with one hand resting very near mine.

Posey's street was a block of old row houses in Queens, and it was full of vans.

Two dozen people with cameras stood on the stoop, shouting up at her window.

*Did you set her up?*

*How much did she pay you?*

*Are you sleeping with them too?*

I got out of the car and walked through the middle of them.

Nobody stopped me.

Dorian came behind me, and a reporter near the front said his name in a high, shocked voice, and the whole crowd turned.

"Evening," Dorian said, and smiled with all his teeth. "I'm here for my friend. If anyone puts a hand on that door, I will remember your face, and so will the camera that's filming you."

They lowered their cameras one at a time.

Maddox's people opened a path to the door, and I went up the stairs.

Posey was sitting on the floor of her hallway with her back to the wall, with her duffel in her lap.

"I told the truth," she whispered. "That's all I did."

"I know," I said. "Get up. You're coming with me."

On the stoop I turned to the cameras, and I said it once, slowly.
